Great Debaters.

1. In the story Nightjohn the slaves were not allowed to pray.  But mammy prayed anyway and sometimes she put her head in a kettle and prayed so she couldnt be heard. When John was brought in he had whip scars and was naked. The slaves were slave with wooden troughs just like amimals. John wanteds tobacco so Sarny gave him some in exchangew for learning to read and write. Alice was whipped because she didnt want to be a breeder. She also ran away and purposely got caught because she wanted to die. The slave oners send vicious dogs after run-away slaves. John escaped from being a slave and licved up north for a while and learned to read and white. Then he came back to be a slave so he could teach other slaves to read and write so they could explain what happened to them as slaves.

2. Philbert was a really good boxer. Malcolm theid boxing and was beat by a white boy and in that time "negroes cant be beat by white boys and return with their head up." He was expelled for putting a thumbtack in his teachers chair. He was sent to a detention home where he had his own room and was allowed to eat with the white family he lived with and ither children in detention home. He felt like a pet because they talked about niggers in front of him. he eventually went to Mason Junior High School where he became class president and the mascott of the basketball team. Whemn they went to the games he was called a nigger and cooned at. At some of the school dances some of his white boy friends would get white girls to dance with Malcolm so they could hold it over their shoulders and get the girls to do anything with them. Malcolm looked up to his sister, Ella, because she was a proud black. He was told by one of his teachers that he could not be a lawyer because he was black and he really didnt like that so he became distant with everyone after he was told that. He moved in with hte Lyons and lived there for two months then when he finished eight grade he moved to Boston to live with his sister.

3. In order the stories show how there was slavery, then no slavery but things were still pretty segregated, then both races got along usually. In the movie it shows someone getting lynched and that also happened a lot in the slavery times like the story Nightjohn. In Mascot the storied are related because blacks are in school and the blacks are accepted by whites most of the time.
